Sunday severe weather prediction

The northern half of Coffee County has been upgraded to a moderate risk of severe weather during the early morning hours Monday while the remainder of the county is enhanced. Moderate means there is a chance of widespread severe storms that are long-lived, widespread and intense including strong tornadoes, widespread wind damage and destructive hail 2" or larger in diameter. Enhanced means numerous severe storms are possible that are widespread with a few tornadoes, reports of wind damage and hail 1"-2" in diameter. The timing of the weather system is forecast to be in the area overnight into Monday, sometime between midnight to 4 a.m.

A wind advisory went into effect at 1 p.m. Sunday with the possibility of an isolated storm ahead of the squall line. There could be 20-30 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 40 mph. The strong winds could affect temporary outdoor structures and cause some power outages. Rainfall with this system is forecast to be around 1 inch and the flood threat is low.

Residents are urged to have a warning system in place during Sunday night to wake them in the event a tornado warning is issued and have plans to take shelter.
