UPDATE

The Alabama Department of Public Health sent notice to the Coffee County EMA that a death has occurred in Coffee County to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The ADPH has not yet confirmed that the cause of death was due to COVID-19, only that it was COVID-19 related. According to Coffee County EMA Director James Brown, the ADPH is working to investigate the death further to determine whether COVID-19 was the primary cause of death.

Thus far Coffee County has 64 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and this was the first reported death.

The ADPH reports all deaths of an individual that had a positive lab result from COVID-19 as a “reported death.” According to the ADPH, the medical record of the deceased person is then reviewed by a physician and the Infectious Disease and Outbreak Staff. Once the review is complete, if the death is attributed to COVID-19, the death will be a confirmed death.

The entire State of Alabama has a total of 5,092 confirmed cases and 144 confirmed deaths from the illness. There are currently 175 reported deaths being investigated.
