New Brockton coach Jonathan Hawkins, left, rallies his team.

The New Brockton Gamecocks (1-4) finally put a check in the win column on Tuesday, Dec. 10, with a 56-54 win over the Samson Tigers, breaking a 28-game losing streak.

That streak dates all the way back to February of 2018, including an 0-23 record in the 2018-2019 season.

“It was a big deal for our kids,” New Brockton coach Jonathan Hawkins said. “It’s something we’ve been building towards and talking about for awhile.

“Unfortunately it’s not something that’s been done a lot here for a long time.”

Coming into the Samson game, the Gamecocks had lost close games to Elba and Pleasant Home, and were playing better than previous seasons. Hawkins, however, wasn’t interested in “moral victories.”

“We lost a few games before this (win) and every time we talked about how we played and that we didn’t want any ‘moral victories.’

“I told them last night we didn’t need any speeches about ‘moral victories’ because they got the real thing. It’s definitely something to build on going forward and it was really good to get it at home and get some positive energy into the program and the school.”

The Gamecocks and Tigers slugged it out for the entirety of the game, battling back-and-forth for four quarters.

New Brockton trailed Samson 11-10 after the opening period but bounced back to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Samson outscored New Brockton 19-16 to leave the two sides tied 40-40 going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Gamecocks were able to outscore Samson 16-14 with senior Dalton Shehee taking over and scoring 14 points for the Gamecocks. Junior Sean Lindley scored the other basket for New Brockton in the final period.

Shehee scored a season-high 19 points in the win, while senior Tariq Walker scored a season-high 25 points, as well.

Junior Julian Noble added six points and sophomore CJ Wilkerson scored four points for New Brockton.

The Gamecocks now get set to face Daleville in the opening round of the Daleville Christmas Tournament on Dec. 12 at 7:45 p.m.
