The New Brockton Gamecocks will host Florala this Friday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in Gamecock Stadium in it annual spring game as the Gamecocks are coming off a frustrating 2020 season.
New Brockton coach Zack Holmes – going into his third season at the helm at New Brockton – said that the energy in practices has been a positive sign thus far.
“It’s going good right now,” Holmes said. “It’s been good even on the days we had to go in the gym (because of the weather). The kids have been really attentive and the energy has been really good.
“Everybody is excited to be out there and competing, which I think carries over from the early morning workouts we’ve had (in the offseason). They’ve done a great job so far.”
New Brockton has been a young team in the past few years but now is laden with veteran juniors and seniors, which Holmes believes will be a big positive for the Gamecocks.
“I think this senior class – with the way things went last year with COVID and all that – seems a lot more self aware of just how important and precious every opportunity you have is,” Holmes said. “They’re taking it extremely serious and jumping into that leadership role that seniors should take on.
“I think that is a product of what happened last year and how that opened everyone’s eyes. The incoming juniors – we have 19 of them – are filled with a lot of guys that had to play last year and were sometimes in games where maybe they weren’t ready to play yet but had to grow up quick.”
The Gamecocks will host Florala – who is coming off an 8-3 season.
“I want to see us compete and I want to see effort and guys laying it on the line for each other and for our community,” Holmes emphasized. “When you talk about nine days of practice some of the execution things won’t be great but we want to see our guys execute and play fast to the best of their abilities and go out there and have fun and enjoy the opportunity to compete. Florala is a good program and coming off a good year and are the type of team we want to compete against.”
