Enterprise senior defensive back Jaylon Webster committed to accept a football scholarship at the University of West Alabama last week.
Webster was one of the Wildcats’ leaders on defense in 2020, amassing 71 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, 13 pass breakups and three blocked kicks. Webster also returned an interception for a touchdown. For his career, Webster totaled 168 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, four interceptions, one touchdown, 21 pass breakups and six blocked kicks at Enterprise.
Webster said that his decision to commit to West Alabama over other offers from schools like Bethel University and Mississippi College hinged on the atmosphere in Livingston.
“I like the atmosphere, it’s not just about football there but is more of a family and brotherhood,” Webster said of West Alabama. “It also has a great education system, which I think I would be able to get my degree in.”
Webster said that he plans to purse a degree in business and entrepreneurship.
While Webster acknowledged that COVID-19 made the 2020 recruitment period a frustrating one, he was still able to find the right college for him.
“The year has been a very off year and it did affect me and everyone else recruitment wise but I’ve had the opportunity to go on visits and talk to coaches on occasion,” Webster said.
Webster has played virtually every position in the defensive secondary and said he is open to playing where his team asks him.
“The position I would like to play is safety – either free or strong safety – but I am willing to play cornerback or whatever they see me doing to have me put in position get on the field early,” Webster said.
Webster – who was The Sun’s Elite 11 Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 – has some simple goals for college.
“My goals are to get a great degree and accomplish as many football accolades as possible and have a memorable time with the staff and everyone at UWA,” Webster said.
Webster and 11 other EHS seniors will be signing their letters-of-intent to colleges today at 2 p.m. in the EHS Performing Arts Center.
