The Enterprise City Schools Board of Education met on June 15 and unanimously approved the hiring of Christie Hughes to be the school system’s new Director of Elementary Instruction.

Hughes will replace Dr. Teri Prim in the position. Hughes comes to Enterprise after spending the past three years as the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) Regional Leadership Literacy Specialist with the Alabama State Department of Education. She had served as the Slocomb Elementary School Principal and First Class Pre-K Director from 2016 until 2019 when she left for the state position.

Previously, Hughes has also served as an elementary school assistant principal for Geneva County Schools and Dothan City Schools. She was also the ARI Reading Coach at Geneva County Elementary School and was a teacher at Geneva County Elementary. She began her educational career in 2005.

Hughes holds a bachelor’s degree from Troy State-Dothan in child psychology and also holds two master’s degrees from Troy. She has one master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and another in Instructional Leadership.

Current Enterprise City Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Zel Thomas – who was recently approved by the board to be the new school system’s next superintendent – sat in for Superintendent Greg Faught at the meeting as he was scheduled to be off. Thomas presented Faught’s recommendations at the board meeting.

In other business, the board approved the amended 2021 budget – which includes federal carry over money from the previous year – and a new salary schedule update.

The board also approved new contracts with RedInk for English Language Learners software for both the high school and junior high schools. The software for the junior high schools will cost $18,000 and $10,500 for the high school. The money for those programs comes from CARES Act funding.

The board approved the hiring of seven new students – bringing the total number up to 40 – to work in the school during the summer.

The June 16 meeting was the first for new school board member Jennifer Boykins. Boykins was selected to the board by the Enterprise City Council in April. She is an Enterprise native that graduated from the University of South Alabama with a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from South Alabama and a Masters of Biblical Studies from the Birmingham Theological Seminary.

Boykins has previously worked as a therapist at Pathway in New Brockton and Life Management Center of Northwest Florida in Marianna, Fla. She has been a Senior Rehabilitation Counselor at the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services in Dothan since 2000. She is also the founder of 2:20 Ministries, which is a ministry and mentoring service for girls and young women.
