The Daleville High School volleyball team defeated Geneva and Pike County in a tri-match Oct. 1.
The Lady Hawks defeated Geneva 25-9 and 25-14 to remain undefeated in Class 3A, Area 3 play.
The match was special for Daleville coach Brooke Sparks because the Lady Hawks wanted to show her they could sweep Geneva, Sparks’ high school team.
“We just got in there, played and got it done,” Sparks said. “They knew it would be awesome if we could beat them. That got them hyped up before the game and they came out ready. They made me proud that day.”
Kiana Coleman and Tamia Richardson led the team in aces in the match with two apiece.
La Tia Fils-Aime finished the game with nine kills, followed by Richardson and Mariah Beckham with four each.
Richardson also led in blocks with two, and Alexis Anderson and Fils-Aime both had one.
The Lady Hawks went on to defeat Pike County 25-8 and 25-18 in their second match of the day.
“I was very impressed with the girls,” Sparks said. “I’m glad they were able to continue to play well.”
Richardson and Anderson recorded two aces apiece to lead the team.
In kills, Richardson led with 10, and Beckham had three.
Kristina Amos made six digs in the game, and Anderson had four.
Daleville lost both games in a tri-match against Straughn and New Brockton Oct. 4.
The Lady Hawks lost their match against Straughn in three games.
Daleville won the first set, but lost the second and third sets.
“I was proud of them,” Sparks said. “They did well, but I felt like they could have won the whole (match).”
The Lady Hawks had a six-point lead of 17-11 until the Lady Tigers tied the game at 19-19. The game was again tied at 24-24 and 25-25 before Daleville scored the last two points to win the set 27-25.
The second set of the match was another close one for the two teams when the game was tied 15-15.
The Lady Tigers then gained a lead of 24-19 to put Straughn within a point of winning the set, but Daleville didn’t allow that to happen when the Lady Hawks rallied to tie the set 25-25 on a five-serve rally from Coleman.
The two teams tied the game at 26-26 before Straughn scored two consecutive points to win the second game and tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Straughn started the game by playing to a 4-0 lead before Daleville rebounded to come within two points of Straughn at 6-4. The Lady Tigers scored nine consecutive points to win the game and the match.
In its second game of the night, the Lady Hawks lost 2-0 against New Brockton.
Daleville lost 25-10 in the first set, and 25-20 in the second set.
“(New Brockton) really looked like they've improved themselves, just like we did,” Sparks said. “It was kind of disappointing that we didn't win that game.”
