Residents throughout the Wiregrass are preparing for ceremonies and events to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In Enterprise, the Enterprise Community Awareness Organization will host two ceremonies at Johns Chapel AME, where Pastor Vernon McLeod will serve as host pastor.

The Annual Youth Celebration will be at 6 p.m., Jan. 17, and will feature music from the MLK Mass Choir, led by Joe Merida and Yolanda Daniels-Milton.

The citywide celebration will be at 5 p.m., Jan. 19, and will feature keynote speaker the Rev. Dr. Andrew T. Holtz Jr., presiding elder of the Ozark-Troy District, Southeast Alabama Conference of the AME Church.

According to organizers, the city will not be hosting a memorial march during this year's observance.

In New Brockton, residents will honor King, Jan. 20, with a program beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the old Warren Smith School on Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

The program will be followed by a march from the school to Greater Springfield Baptist Church for an 11 a.m. program featuring guest speaker Angela Seals.

On Fort Rucker, a Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Program will be observed Jan. 16, at 10 a.m., in the Post Theatre.

The event will feature inspirational speeches, prayers and songs performed by choir groups, as well as a message from guest speaker Command Sgt. Maj. William S. Hayes from the 1st Battalion, 14th Aviation Regiment.

In Daleville, the Daleville Christian Fellowship Worship Center will host its 20th Annual Peace Parade at 9:30 a.m., Jan. 25.

The parade will begin at Advanced Auto Parts on Daleville Avenue and continue to the church on Holman Bridge Road in Daleville.
