A three-year-old lab mix named Harley was shot Saturday afternoon and Daleville police officers are looking for the person or people who did it.

Daleville Public Safety Department Chief Harvey Mathis said Tuesday that the dog was shot while he was in his backyard at 828 Old Newton Road. “This is not an aggressive dog that we’re talking about,” Mathis said. “Harvey’s owners have a surveillance video at their home.”

That is true and it captured an item of interest on the video, said Harley’s owner Kevin Keevert. A white van is shown travelling slowly by the Keevert’s home.

Keevert said he and his wife were gone from their home from about 10:30 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Aug. 29. They noticed that Harley was acting peculiar when they arrived home and upon examination of the dog, the Keeverts discovered that he had been shot through the abdomen.

Keevert said that the dog was taken to a veterinarian clinic emergency room where X-Rays revealed a bullet still lodged inside near his intestines.

Harley had his third doctor’s office visit in as many days Tuesday and is being closely observed, Keevert said. “He is still not out of the woods,” he said.

Keevert said that a neighboring rental house, which stood vacant, was also shot and a recreational vehicle parked further down Old Newton Road also was shot at.

Matthis said that indication are that a high-powered pistol was used in the injury to the dog and the damage to the nearby vacant building and recreational vehicle.

Mathis said that the driver of the white van or anyone else who saw anything amiss in the area of Old Newton Road Saturday are asked to call the department at (334) 598-4442
