The Daleville City Council denied a request to discharge firearms within the city limits at a March 4 meeting.

Resident Rickey Pouncey requested written permission from the council to discharge firearms on properties located south of Comanche Street and along the southwestern part of Newton Road. According to a letter read by Council member Scott Moore, out-of-state landowner Ann Rye granted Pouncey and his 11-member hunting club permission to hunt on her properties.

Rye asked that the council allow the club to hunt on her land for the purposes of animal and land management.

Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth noted that Daleville does not have any specific ordinances that address hunting within the city limits.

Council Member Jimmy Seaton, however, expressed concerns over the safety of hunting in areas near residencies, especially in a military community. Seaton said that residents are not always immediately familiar with hunting season dates, which could put families at risk.

“We don’t have to wait until we have an incident to act on it,” he said.

After an analysis of the properties on a city map and subsequent discussion concerning the safety of hunting within city limits, a motion to approve the request to discharge firearms was denied.

In other reports, Mayor Wigglesworth provided an update regarding the Daleville sidewalk project. The sidewalk, which is still in the design phase, will begin near the intersection of Hwy. 84 and Hwy. 85 and continue towards Bojangles on Daleville Avenue. The finished sidewalk will also connect Donnell Boulevard and Warkhawk Drive to Daleville Avenue.

Chamber of Commerce Director Deanna Carmichael announced the following upcoming spring events: The City of Daleville pageant on April 12, the Chamber Banquet, with a date to be determined, and Fort Rucker Appreciation Day on May 16, which will include several children’s attractions as well as performances from the 98th Army “Silver Wings” Band.

City clerk Angelia Filmore reminded residents of three remaining board vacancies for terms that expired in December 2013. Board appointments are available on the Industrial Development Board and the Daleville Redevelopment Authority for terms ending in 2019 and the Tree City Board for a term expiring in 2016.

For more information on city boards, or how to apply, contact Daleville City Hall at 598-2345.

The Daleville City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at Daleville City Hall.

The council will meet again March 18.
