The Daleville Lady Hawks basketball team picked up a 48-39 victory Feb. 2 on the road against Slocomb.

"Slocomb played hard," DHS girls basketball coach Zach Kelley said. "In the third quarter, they made a run. It was close. We shouldn’t have been in that position, but some crazy things happened."

Daleville led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, and took a 23-13 lead into the locker room at the half.

Slocomb put a rally together in the third quarter and cut the Lady Hawks' lead to 37-31 when the fourth frame began.

"They got the lead there in the fourth by one," Kelley said. "We called timeout, came up with a little plan, got the lead back and kept them off for good."

Daleville outscored the Lady Redtops 11-8 in the final quarter, and Kelley's plan involved the press.

"We went back to pressing a little bit and made them turn the ball over," he said. "We hit some layups in transition. We got some shots around the basket we made. We hit some free throws late in the fourth quarter to kind of push the lead a little farther. They played hard in the fourth quarter and took care of the ball."

Kiarra Pouncy led the Lady Hawks with 15 points, and La'Jasha Fils-Aime' followed with 12. Aleecea Harris had eight, and Kenyetta Stephens added six. LaTyana Raybon scored three. Ellyce Lascano and Raiven Hallford each had two.

Hawks win

The Warhawks played to a 62-52 win against Slocomb.

"We had to battle through," DHS boys basketball coach Blake Garner said. "Sometimes, we’re our own worst enemy. We sit there and we can go on runs, but we let teams back in. If they would just pick up their intensity on defense, rebound and don’t leave open spots. Beat people to spots. The thing about it that’s so frustrating is that we have the ability to hold teams we play to under 40 points most nights."

Daleville led 8-2 at one point in the early stages of the game, but clung to a 17-14 lead after one quarter. The Hawks had to rally in the second to carry a 28-25 edge into the locker room at halftime.

"They were ahead by four points toward the end of the first half," Garner said. "They were up 25-21, and I think we went on a seven-point run right before the end of the half."

The Hawks outscored Slocomb 19-8 in the third quarter to build a 47-33 lead when the fourth began.

"They just started putting up shots," Garner said of the Redtops in the second half. "We helped them some by turning it over in the second half. We didn’t have that many, but everything seems to come at inopportune times."

Shemar Dixon led Daleville with 12 points, and Kainan Pouncy followed with 11.

Jaymiane Fils-Aime' scored 10.

Austin Valdez and Tyler Presley each had nine.
