The Enterprise baseball team rebounded from a weekend loss with a 2-0 victory March 13 against Rehobeth.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
"For the most part this year, we've been a team that's been consistent to where we get off to those fast starts," EHS baseball coach J.D. Pruitt said. "Our guys are accustomed to that. It's something we really focus on from a game-execution aspect."
Chance Warren led off the bottom half of the frame with a walk. He took second on a wild pitch and scored when Grant Thornton roped a single to left off of Rehobeth pitcher Jackson Knight.
"It's always great to get out on top, especially with the quality pitcher we saw tonight," Pruitt said. "Hats off to that guy. He's definitely a guy (who) will be successful at the next level once he gets there. To jump out on him early, that was huge. He's the type of guy (who) we're going to see in playoff baseball. I told our guys that. We battled and we competed with him. That's all we can do."
Rehobeth threatened in the top of the fourth and put a runner in scoring position, but EHS pitcher Nathan Light thwarted the threat with a pair of his five strikeouts.
"Hats off to the pitcher from Rehobeth, but Nathan Light out-dueled him tonight," Pruitt said. "Nathan Light was magnificent. He had all of his pitches going. He threw with great velocity. I really saw him out there having fun tonight. That was great to see, because Nate's been a guy (who has) struggled at times with having confidence in himself and just believing in his ability. I really saw him go out tonight, just have fun and go compete. It was a joy watching him pitch tonight. It was like watching a thing of beauty. He did exceptionally well tonight. He worked ahead in the count, kept hitters off balance and had his changeup going. They were a heavy left-handed lineup so he did a great job of mixing his pitches and keeping those hitters off balance."
Light pitched a complete game to earn the victory.
They're a really good offensive team," Pruitt said. "When Nathan Light is on, he's one of the top pitchers in the state, without a doubt. He definitely was tonight."
The Rebels had another runner in scoring position in the fifth inning, but Enterprise turned a double play to keep strand the tying run.
The Wildcats got an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth.
Trey Simmons doubled before Gabe Anderson and Chance Warren beat out bunt singles to load the bases.
Simmons was thrown out in a fielder's choice, but Anderson scored the final run on a wild pitch.
"We were able to put enough pressure on those guys to where we could add a run there late," Pruitt said. "That was huge. In games like that, any time you can extend a one-run lead that's huge."
Enterprise collected five hits in the game. Rehobeth had three, and the Wildcats committed three errors.
"We're after our guys getting up there and just really competing for each other, competing for the team and competing for the name on the front of the jersey," Pruitt said. "Our guys have done a pretty good job of that all year long."
