The Enterprise boys basketball team was edged 51-48 in overtime Jan. 23 against Charles Henderson.
"It’s heartbreaking," EHS boys basketball coach Alonzo Barkley said. "We played hard, had some big-time plays from some of them, but when you let the home team push you to overtime usually it’s going to be tough to come out of there. You have to steal it if you can."
Enterprise led 8-7 after the first quarter, but trailed 23-16 at halftime.
The Wildcats outscored CHHS 11-6 in the third quarter, but trailed 29-27 at the start of the fourth.
The score was knotted 42-42 at the end of regulation despite a big shot to put the Wildcats up late.
"Sam Purvis hit a 3 and put us up two," Barkley said. "We were down one. He hit a big 3 and put us up two. We just had to make them the hard way."
EHS committed 26 fouls to the Trojans’ six. The Wildcats went 2-for-5 from the free-throw line, and Charles Henderson made 19 of 28 free throws.
Fouls and free throws were two factors Barkley said played a role in the outcome.
"That was the story of the game," he said. "There were several plays down the stretch my guys tried to make good basketball plays and things just didn’t fall our way. Even with that, they still kept battling. We just fell short and lost the game by three."
C.J. Felder led the Wildcats with 16 points, and Mason Jordan followed with 10.
"We really hoped to start this week off the right way," Barkley said. "With a season like we’re having, you have to just keep the victories small and keep their attitudes up. They must believe in us as coaches. They still follow. They still show up. They still work. It’s all about the character of these (players) we’ve got."
Charles Henderson runs past Lady Cats
The Enterprise girls basketball team lost 62-21 against Charles Henderson Jan. 23 after the Lady Trojans pulled away in the second quarter.
"I thought, in the first quarter, clearly we were competitive," EHS girls basketball coach Jeffrey Keller said. "I thought after that we didn't compete with the same intensity we had throughout the year, whether things have gone good or bad."
Enterprise trailed 15-9 after the opening frame, but CHHS scored 23 points in the second quarter to the Lady Cats' six to take a 38-15 lead at the half.
Charles Henderson outscored Enterprise 14-2 in the third quarter, and had a 52-17 advantage when the final frame started.
The Lady Trojans added 10 more points in the fourth and allowed four to secure the win.
Jeide Amos led the Lady Cats with six points.
