A big third inning propelled the New Brockton softball team to a 14-0 win April 6 against Zion Chapel.
"It's huge," NBHS softball coach Bethany Bryant said."We're 3-0 in the area with three huge wins in all of those games. (It) just really means a lot to these girls."
The Lady Gamecocks led 1-0 when the inning started, and added 12 runs in the frame.
The damage began when Mariah Frey reached on an error and moved to third on a bunt hit by Hanna Holloway to put runners at the corners.
Hayley Haggard promptly drove Frey in with a double before Holloway scored on a passed ball.
Courtney Lee sent Haggard home with the fourth NBHS run after she singled to center.
Gracie Harrison scored on a base hit by Bethany Macon, and the Lady Gamecocks led 6-0 when Bailey Blackmon drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.
Macon came home on a base hit by Frey, and NBHS led 9-0 after Carson Hussey hit a two-run double.
Frey scored the 10th run on a passed ball, and a pair of runs were plated when Haggard reached on an error and came all the way around to score.
Macon singled home a run to give New Brockton a 13-0 advantage before the side was retired.
After Jordan Wehunt made quick work of the Lady Rebels in the circle in the fourth, and Jayla Gray scored the final run on an error in the bottom half.
Wehunt finished a quick fifth with a strikeout for the complete game win, in which she allowed just one hit and struck out six batters.
"Our pitching kind of shut them down to start with, narrowed them to the infield," Bryant said. "They couldn't really get anything in the grass. The girls really fielded the ball well. Carson had some good (5-3) plays, and we hit the ball really solid when we hit the ball."
New Brockton got the scoring started in the second inning, when Macon hit a one-out single and later came home on an error.
"It was a good overall effort for them," Bryant said.
