On Oct. 16, students at Enterprise State Community College put down their books and beakers down for a few hours to celebrate those who founded the university in 1963.
Each year Founders' Day brings hundreds of students to the track area of the Enterprise campus for fun, food and celebration, a tradition stretching back several decades.
“Every year since I’ve been here, we have celebrated the founders of the college on Founders' Day,” said Kathy Haynes, a math teacher at ESCC, who has taught since the late 70’s. “We used to be have it on the quad, but we moved it to the track area a few years ago.”
When it was first started, Founders' Day was in the spring, but last year ESCC decided to move it to fall to take advantage of the cooler weather.
Haynes said the event used to consist of more individualized games, but now team-based relays and other competitions seem to be the main event at Founders' Day.
Team based water games, water relays and other competitions have had Weevils banding together to form their teams throughout the last few weeks.
Terri Parker, a co-chairperson for Founder’s Day 2013 and an ESCC recruiter, said the students always seem to enjoy the break from class and the fun had at Founders' Day.
“A few years ago I was in charge of student activities,” she said. “A lot of students were saying they wanted to do something ‘big,’ and that’s when we started bringing in inflatables and having relay contests on the track area.”
This year students played corn hole, football, volleyball, ran relays and participated in several competitions like a chili cook off and the Weevils’ Got Talent showcase.
This year’s relay winner was “Team Soldiers,” made up of students Mollie Hadley, Chad Bryant, Carmen Martinez, Ashton Senn, Natalie Luckett and Ryan Marler.
Associate Dean of Students name was the unfortunate winner of the Kiss the Pig category.
After students gave more than $160 to Relay for Life, Ammons took to the front of the stage to kiss Zelda the pig.
Some of the more tasty events included baking contests, a chili cook off and barbecue contest.
Students were able to sample the contest entries and were also given free hotdogs, chips and drinks.
“There’s lots of fun activities for the students to enjoy” Parker said. “We want them to have a good time.”
