Some of readers recently participated in the Enterprise Scavenger Hunt. Readers were asked 10 questions about the history of Enterprise. Do you have the knowledge to answer these questions at home?

1. Where outside in Enterprise can you find the name of the city’s founder?

Answer: Enterprise City Cemetery

John Henry Carmichael is the founder of Enterprise, and his name can be seen on his headstone in Enterprise City Cemetery. It can also be seen on the front entrance to the cemetery.

2. Where is the original Boll Weevil Monument located in Enterprise?

Answer: Enterprise Depot Museum

The damaged Boll Weevil Monument is located inside the Enterprise Depot Museum along with many other items about Enterprise’s history. A replica of the monument is located in the center of town.

3. What location in Enterprise is known as “The Hole?”

Answer: Bates Memorial Stadium

Bates Memorial Stadium is often referred to as “The Hole.” It was Enterprise High School’s football field up until 2010, when the school relocated to Wildcat Stadium.

4. What is the name of the site in a small corner of Enterprise that displays a realistic sculpture of aviator Capt. Jerry Stripling?

Answer: The Aviator Monument

The Aviator Monument was dedicated in 1972 and is “Dedicated to the men of Army Aviation whose gallantry and devotion to duty ensure American freedom.”

5. What park in Enterprise is named after an Enterprise coach?

Answer: Peavy Park

Peavy Park is named after the late Enterprise coach Alfred Peavy Jr., who coached at Coffee County Training School and Coppinville High School. He was later inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

6. What building in Enterprise has the original doors from the Enterprise Public Library at the entrance of its establishment?

Answer: Troy Cable building

The Troy Cable building at 106 North Edwards Street has the original doors from the Enterprise Public Library when it was located at the corner of South Edwards Street and East College Street.

7. Where is the oldest church in Enterprise?

Answer: First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church was organized in 1883 by 13 charter members as Carmichael Chapel of Elba Circuit, and the present structure was built between 1903 and 1904.

8. What building in Enterprise was built in 1903, had two entrances and was originally named after the hotel manager Henry McGee?

Answer: The Rawls Hotel

The Rawls Hotel was built in 1903 by Japheth Rawls on Main Street with two entrances; one on the street and one at the back for railway passengers.

9. What sidewalk bears the name “Dr. W.W. Grubbs 1904” with a metal plaque in front of an Enterprise establishment?

Answer: The sidewalk in front of Southern Broadway

The sidewalk in front of Southern Broadway Dinner Theater has a marker for Dr. Grubbs, who was the first doctor in Enterprise, according to his headstone in Enterprise City Cemetery.

10. Where was the first brick public school built in Enterprise?

Answer: West College Street

The first brick building public school was Coffee County High School, which opened in 1908 on West College Street, but burned down in 1911. Enterprise Junior High School was located at this site up until 2015.

All of our readers that submitted selfies answered nine out of 10 questions correctly. However, the last question seemed to stump our readers. Many thought the answer was College Street Elementary, but the school was not built until 1919, after Coffee County High School was built.
