Draft beer sales could be coming to Enterprise as soon as next year, if approved by the Alabama Legislature.
Enterprise council members approved a resolution requesting for authorization by local act of the Legislature to permit the sale of draft beer or keg beer on or off premises by local licensed retailers within the city limits of Enterprise.
The city council has been discussing the idea of permitting draft beer sales since April of this year when a petition with more than 1,600 signatures in favor of draft beer sales was presented to the council.
Mayor Kenneth Boswell said he thought draft beer sales was something worth looking into due to the inquiries about draft beer from incoming restaurants.
Boswell said by allowing draft beer, it would allow the city to be more open to restaurants looking to settle in Enterprise.
After that initial meeting, the city set up a working session in August with local Rep. Barry Moore, who explained the legislative process and what the city needed to do in order to pass a local act for draft beer sales.
If authorized by the Legislature, it would allow the city to pass an amendment to its current ordinance relating to alcohol sales to include draft or keg beer.
The Legislature convenes for the 2014 session on Jan. 14 and ends April 28.
In other news, council members approved its contract with the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce.
The contract is for a term of one year for $50,000 for general funding and hospitality functions that will be paid in quarterly payments.
The city also agreed to pay the chamber an amount equal to half of the 4 percent lodging tax that was instituted in 2009.
