The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 373 agreed at its monthly meeting Oct. 13, to pay the annual increase of rent at the Clayhatchee Community house if guaranteed another five years at the location by the city.
“I told (the city) it had to secure the upstairs if we’re going to pay $300 a year,” Nancy Jackson, VVA member, said. “They said they would, and I know they have come and looked at it. I just don’t know what they’ve decided.”
The city of Clayhatchee recently raised the annual cost of rent at the community house from $140 a year to $300 a year.
Members agreed to pay the increase if the city would agree to secure the storage area upstairs and guarantee the local VVA chapter the location every second Saturday of every month for a total of five years to conduct its monthly meeting.
In other business, two members were recognized at the meeting for their acknowledgement in the community and state.
Vietnam Veteran Bobby Enfinger will be featured on the cover of Alabama Living Magazine in November.
Alabama Living Magazine is a publication of Pea River Electric Cooperative in Ozark.
G.W. Long Elementary School has also invited Enfinger to speak on behalf of the VVA on Nov.6, at the school.
“I feel honored to be apart of it, and I thank you (members) for what you have done,” Enfinger said. “It’s a great honor to know that you’re respected now and not when you’re gone.”
At the 2012 Alabama Vietnam Veterans Awards and Banquet, Jackson was honored with the 2012 Verbon Evans Selfless Servant Award.
Verbon Evans, also known as “Teddy Bear,” was a Navy seal and Vietnam Veteran.
He was well known for his selflessness in helping others.
Evans passed away from a massive heart attack in 1994, according to VVA Chapter 373 members.
